Universal Natural Gas (UniGas) is prepared for the freezing temperatures expected across much of Texas in the coming days. Our infrastructure has been inspected, and our technicians are on standby. Your safety and comfort remain our top priorities, and we want to share a few important reminders to help you stay protected during the cold weather.
Report suspected natural gas leaks by calling UniGas at 800-925-0705 and 911.
Natural gas is odorized to smell like rotten eggs. If you detect this odor, leave the area on foot immediately and move to a safe location before calling.
Never use an oven or gas stovetop to heat your home.
If using a space heater, choose one with an automatic shut-off feature.
Keep all items at least three feet away.
Do not allow children or pets near the heater.
If the heater uses natural gas, propane, or wood, ensure it is properly vented to the outdoors.
Ensure your heating system is operating safely and efficiently.
Clean or replace filters as recommended.
Check that external vents for dryers and natural gas appliances are clear and unobstructed.
Test your carbon monoxide (CO) and smoke alarms and replace batteries as recommended.
Know the early signs of CO poisoning, such as headache and fatigue similar to the flu but without a fever.
If CO exposure is suspected, leave the area immediately, get fresh air, and call 911.
Energy Efficiency Tips
With freezing temperatures settling in across Texas, we’re seeing an increase in natural gas usage as customers heat their homes. Colder weather naturally causes gas-powered appliances, such as furnaces, fireplaces, water heaters, dryers, stoves, and outdoor equipment (spas, pools, kitchens, and generators), to work harder, leading to higher consumption. To manage energy use efficiently and help keep your heating costs down:
Cold weather often leads to increased energy usage. To heat your home more efficiently and help manage costs:
Set your thermostat to 66º, but avoid lowering it further to prevent frozen pipes.
Check for drafts around doors, windows, and openings such as pipes or ducts. Seal any leaks with caulk or weather-stripping.
Small, everyday actions truly add up when trying to reduce energy costs.
